Hey, it’s Dr. Troy. The cough and flu and cold chiropractor.

A lot of patients go, chiropractic for the flu or the cold or a cough, are you kidding me? I’m not going to come into your office and spread it around.

I always tell patients, hey if you’re feeling blue then Dr. Troy should check you. They ask, well, why is that?  I always tell them the best time to get adjusted is when you’re not feeling good. Many times we will see coughs, colds and flus in the winter.

You’ve got to think, what goes away in the winter In the great northwest? A little orange thing in this sky we see this white hazy gray stuff called clouds that blocks the sun. Remember sun, when exposed to our skin produces vitamin D.

There’s a lot of information on the internet if you google it, vitamin D deficiency and colds and flus and coughs and colds. So, one thing we look at is hey do you have enough vitamin D? We sell vitamin D in our office. I recommend 10,000 IU’s a day of vitamin D, 5,000 IU’s of day for children. That’s the maintenance dose. Many of us are low on vitamin D, especially during the cold and winter, flu season. Supplementing is the first thing.

How else does chiropractic help?

If we look at the autonomic nervous system; you gotta realize that your brain your spinal cord and the nerves control every function and every cell inside your body. So if there’s an interference due to spinal biomechanics being off that’s going to weaken your ability to adapt to cloudy days, cold weather and your ability to heal is going to be diminished.

What do we look for?

Somebody’s feeling yucky or blue I said let’s check you, what are we checking for? We’re looking to see where the spinal joints are out of alignment, which interferes with the flow of nerve communication in the body, which regulates your breathing, which regulates your elimination, which regulates your autonomic switch regulate your lymphatics, your elimination in your bowels and your kidneys, and in your skin.

So if there’s a weakness where you’re going to be more susceptible to colds, flus, coughing, runny nose, these kinds of things. So I always say let’s check you to get the pressure off if it’s there because if there is pressure and stress on the nerves your innate healing power is going to be diminished and you’re going to be more susceptible.

Summary

We always say load up on your vitamin D, drink lots of water, get adjusted, exercise helps, if you can get some sunlight; I’ll tell patients, it’s sunny out today you only need 10 to 15 minutes go sit outside on your back porch. Even though it might be February or January, it’s 40 degrees out, sit outside and expose your skin to the sun it will help you feel better.
