Hey, it’s Dr. Troy here the Vancouver chiropractor.

Mike from Portland asked me a question. He said, “hey, what’s better should I lay flat on my back or sit in a chair when I’m not active?”

Really, that is individual. Some people if they lay on their back they will feel relief, they will feel the pressure of gravity come right off of them. On the other hand, some people who have lower back issues will have to prop a pillow under their knees to take the pressure off of their back.

One thing you have to remember is that sitting is going to load the spine 30% more. So, depending on how much pain you may have in your back I would recommend lying over sitting especially if you have back pain. However, with sitting, sometimes you just want to rest, so you want to get in a comfortable position. I would recommend putting your feet up in a lazy boy Barca lounger type of chair.

So these are some of the different positions that you can lay in to help reduce the pressure and take the stress off of your lower back, especially if you’ve been working a repetitive, strenuous job all day.
