Hey, this is Dr. Troy, Vancouver chiropractor.

I want to talk about DDD.  You probably found this online.  Somebody told you that you have Degenerative Disc Disease.  Now, that doesn’t mean you’re going to be hurting, because in a lot of our patients we find when we x-ray them, they have Degenerative Disc Disease.

What does that mean?

That means the discs in between the vertebra are degenerating.  They’re breaking down.  You might see calcium salts or bone spurs forming.  They have degenerative spinal conditions.

What’s that caused from?

Usually, it’s caused from trauma and a joint not moving properly or moving too much, usually from some sort of trauma in the past.  Degenerative joint disease is very common.  It doesn’t mean you’re gonna be hurting though.  With regards to Medicare, Medicare guidelines, federal guidelines, those say exacerbation of a chronic condition.  So degenerative joint disease is a chronic condition.  Many times you’ll see people exacerbate.

What do I mean by that?

I mean they go out they move the garbage, they do the dishes, they wash the car, they lift the chicken food into the chicken coop and they exacerbate this degenerative chronic area.  So now it hurts.

Summary

Chiropractic can help so many people with this condition by keeping the joints moving keeping the spine freed up, keeping the nerves freed up, reducing the swelling, which allows the body to feel and function better.  So, if you’ve been diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease, if you’re having symptomatology, chiropractic can be right for you because usually, you are not seeking doctor visits unless you’ve got some sort of neck or back pain.   This is not a contraindication to adjusting your spine, to using chiropractic methods to help restore your function and your feeling to a better level naturally.

One of our goals is to try to help people to not take as much medication.  I can’t tell you how many times have people come in they’re like, “I have degeneration and I’ve got to live with it.  So I’m just going to take you know 10 or 12 Advil a day.” I’ve seen people that have done this for numbers of years.  There is one lady who is on Advil. She was taking 18 a day for over 10 years.  She did run into some liver and kidney problems.  So, if we can find a natural way to keep the spinal joints moving so they don’t continue to degenerate or rust, as I call it, then chiropractic is right for you.
