Hello, this is Dr. Troy Dreiling, in Vancouver, Washington, the Chiropractor for TMJ.

You ask, “What is TMJ?” Well, that stands for Temporo Mandibular Joint, temporal, mandible, the joint right here, TMJ. This is a picture here. This is the skull, the joint, the TMJ, actually your jaw, is like a hinge joint. So it hinges and swings like this.

So, what is TMJ?  It’s just a way to say, “Hey, this joint hurts!” If your joint hurts, then it’s TMJ.  What do we look for? How do you fix it? Is chiropractic right? How can it happen? Well, there’s a lot of causes for this. One could be teeth, the bite, all that could be how you bite and create tension here. There’s a lot of dentistry out there that focuses on TMJ.  But one of the big things with chiropractic is alignment.

If this is a hinge joint and it’s hinged, and for example, your skulls tipped, now your jaw is going to hinge at an angle versus how it’s supposed to.  One of the things we look at is spinal alignment, skull alignment, and also the joint here could be out of alignment creating joint dysfunction, causing tension and irritation. As a chiropractor, we look to the spine first.  We start getting that adjusted.  Maybe there are some issues here in the masseter muscle. I’ve seen many times where there may be trigger points. You may clench at night and night guard might be a good thing to do.

There’s a lot of things that can cause TMJ and I’ve seen great success over the years by adjusting the spine, working on the TMJ joints, working on the musculature, and then putting people on night guards, so when they’re at home at night and they’re biting down it can relax that joint.

There’s a lot of things we can do to see if chiropractic is right for you for TMJ and other issues.

If you’re suffering or know someone suffering, this is Dr. Troy, the TMJ chiropractor in Vancouver, Washington. (360) 260-6903 is my number.  I look forward to seeing you in the office to see if we can help you.
