Hi, it’s Dr. Troy.

Blood pressure is a huge topic today and a huge issue for many people. I want to talk about how chiropractic may be able to help resolve some of your blood pressure issues.

WebMD recently did a study out of Chicago. They found that upper cervical adjustments actually beat out two blood pressure lowering drugs for lowering blood pressure. It’s a pretty amazing study and when the researchers looked at it they said, “Wow, this can’t be true”.

Here is how this works. You have two branches to your nerve system. The sympathetic nerves, everybody knows what that is, it’s the fight or flight, that raises your blood pressure, heart rate and breathing. Then you have the parasympathetic which is down in the sacrum and in the upper cervical region.  When these two systems get out of balance because there is a disconnect from the vertebral misalignment, you can actually have high blood pressure.

We know the vagus nerve innervates that communication to your heart, helps regulate blood pressure, so, if there is a disturbance in the flow of nerves then it can alter blood pressure.

The only way to determine if chiropractic is right for you is to come in and get checked to see if there is a misalignment in your spine. People always say, “well, what causes my spine to get out of line?”. Could be traumas, acute traumas like a car crash, a fall or a blow to the head. It could be more sinister like sitting there all day and driving, typing or talking on the phone. All of these things can play a factor in putting stress on the nerve system, so now your body doesn’t adapt right and you have symptoms like high blood pressure and other symptoms too.

We determine if chiropractic is right for you through an exam, x-rays, history and then we lay out a game plan if we feel like we can help you get back on track and get your health under control.

If you’re interested call our office, 360-260-6903 and we will get you in to see if we can help you. This is Dr. Troy, Vancouver chiropractor.

More Information on High Blood Pressure

Not many people think of the chiropractor when they are dealing with high blood pressure, but research has indicated that a visit to a chiropractic specialist can actually lower blood pressure. This is a significant finding because high blood pressure is an epidemic in the United States. According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, around 75 million adults suffer from high blood pressure, meaning one in every three American adults. Of those, barely half (54%) have their condition under control. On top of that, another third of adults show signs of prehypertension.

In most cases, doctors will seek to prescribe medications to treat patients suffering from high blood pressure, but when there are natural or non-invasive treatments available, they would be wise to explore these possibilities first, such as chiropractic care.

Causes of High Blood Pressure

There are many possible causes for high blood pressure, and diagnosing an exact reason for the condition can be complicated because multiple factors could be working together. Some of the main originators of high blood pressure include the following:

  • Obesity
  • Lack of exercise or physical activity
  • Consuming too much salt
  • Smoking
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Aging
  • Genetics
  • Too much stress
  • Kidney disease
  • Adrenal or thyroid conditions
  • Insomnia or sleep apnea
  • Congenital defects
  • Taking stimulants, in particular, illegal drugs such as cocaine or amphetamines

The more of these conditions or behaviors that apply to you, the more likely you are to have problems with high blood pressure. On top of the list above, a misaligned spine or problems with a person’s nervous system are also among the possible causes.

This is because a person’s circulatory system, also known as the vascular system, which is the part of the body that is responsible for transporting nutrients and oxygen through the blood, is closely tied to the nervous system. When a person’s spine is misaligned, it can directly impact the ability of their nerves to regulate their circulatory system, leading to many different problems, including high blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure Analysis and Treatment

Doctors have many treatment options at their disposal when it comes to high blood pressure. The one that is right for you will depend on a number of factors, including what is causing your condition. At Zenaptic, we will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the combination of factors that are leading to your high blood pressure. If we discover that you are suffering from a misalignment, the good news is that we may be able to treat your high blood pressure without resorting to more extreme methods, such as medication or surgery.

High Blood Pressure and Chiropractic Care

Our goal at Zenaptic is to work with our patients to improve their overall health and wellbeing, rather than to just focus on the most painful symptoms. While chiropractic care can directly lead to a positive and long-term improvement of your condition, it works best when it is combined with an all around approach to your health. High blood pressure can be positively impacted by quitting smoking, improving your diet, and exercising regularly.

Working with a chiropractor can, of course, do much more than just lower your blood pressure. You’ll find that it helps stimulate circulation, reduces your stress, and helps to alleviate pain. It won’t be long before you find yourself sleeping better and possessing more energy.
