Hey, it’s Dr. Troy here!

A lot of patients ask me what’s NUCCA? NUCCA stand for National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association.

It’s a group of doctors who practice a similar technique that focuses solely on this little bone right here, it’s called the atlas, also known as the upper cervical region.

If you look right through that big hole, known as the foramen magnum, your lifeline goes right through this hole. This is the bone Christopher Reeve broke which really affected all kinds of stuff.

The two smaller holes deliver 80% of blood supply to your head. So, if this vertebra shifts out of alignment it can interfere with nerve flow, blood flow, and cerebral spinal fluid flow. This can even be associated with ingestion, breathing, and gut issues. We have seen patients with sciatica who have had atlas misalignment.

The upper cervical movement or group, are people who focus on correcting the atlas misalignment. NUCCA is one group. There is orthospinology, that is one of the techniques we use in our office. They are very similar and have very similar concepts. The only difference is the nuances and tweaks on how they deliver the method. The concept is still the same, which is to take the pressure off of the spinal cord, reestablish the connection between the brain and the body so the healing messages flow again.

One of the number one signs that the atlas is out of alignment is a supine leg check. That is when we lay the patient on their back and check their leg length to see if there are any discrepancies. We can use head rotation because the spinal cord attaches to the atlas with the dentate ligaments.

We can challenge all of these things to see if the atlas is out of alignment. They are very low-cost diagnostic tests compared to all of these big imaging centers with thousands of dollars being spent on imaging. All you need is a simple leg check test that cost nothing and can actually determine a lot about your body and if you’re vibrating at a high frequency to express health, healing, and function.

Those are my thoughts on NUCCA, upper cervical, some of the different techniques like hole in one, grostic, and orthospinology which is the one I use.
