Why Would Chiropractic Care Create a Headache?

Since chiropractic care treats the nervous system, there is a risk of headaches from adjustments.

During your adjustment, pressure is released from your nerves and some patients suffer a headache from the adjustment. This is rare but can happen.

If a headache occurs, it could be due to one of the following:

  1. Your adjustment might be misaligned. As mentioned earlier, please call us, so we can advise you on what to do next. It’s possible that we may need to re-adjust you to relieve the headache pain you are feeling.
  2. Underlying condition. If your headaches occur every time after an adjustment then you could have an underlying condition. We may refer you to a headache specialist or get MRI’s to ensure that you do not have a more serious condition.
  3. Change in technique. Not every chiropractor uses the same techniques. For example, there is a device called an Arthrostim which uses light electric pulses to move the vertebra back into place. Sudden movements can be too much for some patients.
  4. Lifestyle. Patients who have been ingesting too many prescription drugs or alcohol might get headaches after an adjustment. This occurs because the nerve channels “open up”, overwhelming the nervous system. After your nervous system has acquired the healthy blood flow, your headache should dissipate.

What Should I Do If I Get a Headache From Chiropractic Care?

Headaches after chiropractic are very rare.

Nevertheless, if a headache occurs, it can be very concerning. We can help you safely treat your headache, so you enjoy the benefits of your recent chiropractic adjustment.

We suggest that you do not end your chiropractic if you get a headache after the first appointment. Give us a call if you have further questions.
