Hey, it’s Dr. Troy here, Zenaptic Chiropractic.

22 years later in practice, patients ask me how long is it going to take me to fix my TMJ problem?

Well, the first thing you have to understand is what TMJ is. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. You have two of them, one on each side of the jaw, it actually hooks to the skull.

The first thing we look for, is the skull aligned properly on the atlas? Now that you have this hinge joint that’s moving , if it’s unhinged you’re going to create tension in the joint capsule and you can create muscle imbalances in the masseter. So that’s the first thing we look for.

People can also have trauma to the jaw, which will sprain and strain the TMJ joint. You can get capsular adhesion, scar tissue in the joints, cross fiber friction on the joint or the masseter muscle, you can get trigger points in there and muscle spasms.

With chiropractic care, we can adjust the jaw, we can adjust the skull to get those joints functioning properly to help restore balance. It varies, you can see great results one time, sometimes it can take you 30 visits. It just depends on how long the problem has been there, how much trauma has been associated with it, is there degeneration?

You know, do you continue to eat corn nuts, steak, taffy, and chew on jawbreakers? Have you had dental surgery? So there are a lot of varying factors that can contribute to how long or how little care it’s going to take to resolve these TMJ issues.

This is Dr. Troy. If you’re interested in a consultation call our office (360) 260-6903.
